Cells for writers

Our Cells for Writers program offers the unique opportunity to work in studios at Old Melbourne Gaol, right in the heart of Melbourne CBD.

O Henry used the time to write short stories. The concept of it inspired Lord Byron to write one of his most famous poems. Dostoevsky’s experience shaped his perceptions on life and his later literary works. Now Writers Victoria wants you to emulate these illustrious writers and go to jail.

There are two studio spaces available to rent for for periods of one month or more, and commence at the start of each calendar month.

Rates for the studios are low. From time to time, writers can be supported to undertake a residency in the Cells for Writers through our Personal Patrons program.
