Writers Victoria is pleased to be partnering with the Nillumbik Shire Council for the Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Writing 2024.
Entries open 1 July and close at 5pm (AEDT) on 2 October 2023.
The winning entries will be announced at a public event in May 2024 and also published in an anthology.
Entries are accepted in the following categories:
Short Story
(The Alan Marshall Short Story Award)
- Up to 2500 words
- Theme: Resistance
- Open, Local and Youth awards
Memoir
- Up to 2500 words
- Open, Local and Youth awards

Prize and entry structure
The prize money and entry fee are the same for Short Story and Memoir. The prizes are cash plus inclusion in an anthology.
The prize is open to all Australian residents.
All entries are to be submitted online.
We strongly encourage entries from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people, people living with a disability, culturally or linguistically diverse people, and LGBTIQA+ people.
Entry is free for Concession Card holders and for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.
Open
Entry fee $25
Prize: $5000
Local
Entry fee $10
Open to writers who work, live or study in Nillumbik.
All local entries are automatically entered into the Open section.
Prize: $2500
Youth
Entry fee: free
Open to young writers aged between 11–21 years.
Prize: $1000
Mayor’s Award
A $500 Mayor’s Award is also awarded from the shortlisted entries in the local section of the Short Story award.
