First run in 2019 to celebrate Writers Victoria’s 30th year, Flash Fiction is a micro-fiction competition that runs every day in April. Writers Victoria provides a prompt word, based around an overall theme, and invites participants to respond with up to 30 words inspired by and/or using the prompt word. From hundreds of entries every day, we pick a daily winner, and at the end of the month we choose an overall winner, who receives a free Writers Victoria workshop place of their choosing.
In 2019 the theme for Flash Fiction was ‘grit’, and the 2020 theme was ‘focus’. The initial Flash Fiction was run in celebration of our 30th anniversary, with the subsequent year run in order to give writers stuck in lockdown and facing the challenges of a rapidly altered world a creative outlet. We continue Flash Fiction in 2022 due to the proven popularity of the competition year on year, and to celebrate the incredible creativity and dedication of the writing community.
