In this seminar, you’ll focus on Interview with the Vampire, examining the craft of the vampire in book and film, but take inspiration from a range of vampires. You’ll consider characterisation through vampires, which have evolved both physically and psychologically and in dialogue with a range of theories, moving from Dracula to Twilight and beyond.

Details

Literature Lessons is an evening seminar series that hovers between craft talk, reading group and workshop. Led by writers focusing on their sources of inspiration, you’ll take craft cues from interesting texts and find new ways to approach your own work. These sessions involve discussion of writing and film and include exercises designed to help you put the lessons into practice. 

You Will Learn:

  • key vampire films inspired by books, from Dracula to Twilight
  • the physical evolution of the vampire on screen
  • the psychological evolution of the vampire on screen
  • how theory explains some of these vampires, e.g. Postcolonialism, Marxism
  • contemporary depictions of the vampire, beyond the page and screen

About the Tutor:

Diego Ramírez is an artist with dreams, a writer with hopes and a facilitator with beliefs. Ramírez has written locally for Art Gallery of Western Australia, Art and Australia, Disclaimer, MEMO, un Projects and internationally with NECSUS (NL) and BLUE journal (US x FR). As a facilitator, he is the former Director of Seventh Gallery and sits in panels for Creative Victoria, City of Melbourne, and is a peer assessor for Australia Council. He is represented by MARS Gallery.
