Summary:
Beginnings are crucial; if the beginning of a story is weak chances are no one will ever get to the middle, let alone the end. How do you choose the right way to start? How do you craft a beginning that will keep the reader wanting more? This workshop combines critical reading with writing exercises to examine the importance of the opening sentence, opening paragraphs and opening chapters, unpicking what works and why.

This workshop will take place online and will be recorded, with the recording sent to registered participants afterward. Detailed instructions for participation will be provided in the week preceding the event.

- ways to approach writing your first chapter
- how to read critically and apply lessons to your own work
- how to capture a reader's attention in an opening sentence
- revising your opening as your manuscript changes
About the Tutor:
Laurel Cohn is a book editor passionate about communication and the power of stories in our lives. As a developmental editor, assessor and writing coach she has been helping writers prepare their work for publication for over three decades. She is a regular workshop presenter for Writers Victoria, Writing NSW, Queensland Writers Centre and Byron Writers Festival. She has a PhD in Literary and Cultural Studies.
