He covers the challenges and rewards of drawing from lived experience, how we might capture life in all its complex entanglements, and how writing autobiographical fiction can hone useful skills for storytelling regardless of label or genre.

Dao shares insight from his own writing, including the powerfully moving new novel Anam, a story about memory, inheritance, colonialism and belonging that blends essay, family history and fiction.

About the Tutor:

André Dao is a writer, editor, researcher, and artist. His debut novel, Anam, won the 2021 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript. Anam will be published in May 2023 by Penguin Random House Australia and in August 2023 by Picador UK. He is the co-founder of Behind the Wire, an oral history project documenting people’s experience of immigration detention, and a producer of the Walkley-award winning podcast, The Messenger.
