Details

How can writers of historical fiction tread the line between fact and imagination to create characters and settings that feel vivid and lived in rather than merely researched? It’s a conundrum that Sarah Schmidt knows well, having penned the award-winning, Women’s Prize–longlisted novel See What I Have Done, which reimagines the infamous Lizzie Borden murders, and Blue Hour, her latest historical fiction novel. In this workshop, Schmidt helps you understand the needs of your characters, find ways to use real settings to deepen your plot and themes, and consider why abandoning the concept of historical fiction can liberate your characters and reveal ‘truth’ in your story.

About the Tutor:

Sarah Schmidt’s debut novel, See What I Have Done, was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2018 and the International Dublin Literary Award 2019, and won the ABIA Literary Fiction Award 2018. Her shorter writings have appeared both in journals and newspapers in Australia and internationally. Blue Hour is her second novel.
