
Since 2017, the Neilma Sidney Literary Travel Fund has provided access to professional development travel opportunities for emerging, mid-career and established Australian writers and literary sector workers.
On behalf of the Myer Foundation, the judges of this round and the Writers Victoria team, we are delighted to announce the recipients of Round 14 Neilma Sidney Literary Travel Fund.
The judges for Round 14 were:
David Blumenstein, editor and author and illustrator of comics
Emily Westmoreland, writer, bookseller and literary programmer
Carly Findlay, writer, speaker and appearance activist
We received 169 applications from across Australia, which totalled $1,130,076. After much deliberation, the judges awarded $50,595 to nine successful recipients.
Congratulations to:
Journalist, author and filmmaker Antony Loewenstein (NSW) – awarded funding to travel to Israel and Palestine for his new book.
Writer Zeynab Gamieldien (NSW) – awarded funding to travel to Cape Town, South Africa, to undertake research for her third novel on the experiences of Cape Malay and other non-white people during Apartheid.
Author Andrea Rowe (VIC)  – awarded funding to travel to Cairns, Queensland, to research and participate in reef restoration projects in the Great Barrier Reef for a picture book series.
Writer Caitlyn Stone (WA) – awarded funding to travel to South Africa to uncover and trace the history of the South African anti-apartheid literary magazine, Staffrider.
Playwright, musician and producer Joel Te Teira (VIC)  – awarded funding to travel to Canada to attend the First People’s Arts Gathering.
Writer Vivian Pham  (NSW) – awarded funding to travel to the UK to attend a writing residency at the University of Oxford to complete a novel-in-verse.
Writer and poet Elizabeth Walton (NSW) – awarded funding to travel to Leeds, London and Dublin to launch her book of How to Read a City, Your Place of Last Resort.
Writer Ledya Khamou (VIC) – awarded funding to travel to Turkey to conduct research for her novel Food Baby.
Author Laura Elizabeth Woollett (VIC)  – awarded funding to travel to the UK to promote the book Hell Days, her first work of non-fiction.
The Neilma Sidney Literary Travel Fund has concluded with Round 14. Writers Victoria thanks The Myer Foundation for their vital support and generosity throughout the lifespan of the Neilma Sidney Literary Travel Fund.
