Collective Celebrations


The shortlists for the 2018 Queensland Literary Awards (QLAs) have been announced.

Among the shortlisted titles in each category are:


  • Jane Godwin, tutor, for ‘Go Go and the Silver Shoes’

Young Adult: 

  • Scot Gardner, member and tutor, for ‘Sparrow’

Steele Rudd Award for a Short Story Collection:

  • Tony Birch, tutor, for ‘Common People’
  • Jennifer Down, tutor, for ‘Pulse Points’

Judith Wright Calanthe Award for a Poetry Collection:

  • Bella Li, tutor, for ‘Lost Lake’


The Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) has announced the longlist for the 2018 Australia Book Prize.

Among the longlisted titles are:

  • Bernadette Brennan, member, for 'A Writing Life: Helen Garner and Her Work'
  • Kate Cole-Adams, member, for 'Anaesthesia: The Gift of Oblivion and the Mystery of Consciousness'


Hachette Australia and the Emerging Writers’ Festivalhave announced the longlist for the 2018 Richell Prizefor emerging writers.

Among the longlisted works are:

  • Mandy Beaumont,member, for ‘She Is Bright Light and All Brilliance’
  • Lou Greene, member, for ‘The Book Lovers’
  • Fiona Murphy, member, for ‘The Shape of Sound’


Finalists have been announced for this year’s Melbourne Prize for Literature, as well as the Best Writing Award and the Readings Residency Award.

The finalists for the Melbourne Prize for Literature are:

  • Tony Birch,tutor
  • Alison Lester,tutor
  • Christos Tsiolkas, tutor and member

The Melbourne Prize for Literature is awarded triennially to a Victorian author whose body of published work has made an outstanding contribution to Australian literature.

The finalists for the Best Writing Award are:

  • Judith Bishop, member
  • Kate Cole-Adams, member
  • Maria Tumarkin, tutor
  • Jeff Sparrow, tutor

Among the finalists for the Readings Residency Award are:

  • Micheline Lee, tutor and member


The longlist for the 2018 Voss Literary Prize has been announced.

Among the longlisted titles are:

  • Sofie Laguna,tutor, for ‘The Choke’
  • Bram Presser, member, for ‘The Book of Dirt’
  • Jane Rawson, member, for ‘From the Wreck’
