Many thanks to everyone who completed our annual member surveys earlier this year.
We use the surveys to support and improve the work that we do, develop new project ideas, and make sure our program is responding to the needs of our members and writing community.
Who are our members?
Surveys were completed by 180 members (2015; 185), 259 lapsed members (2015; 18) and 72 non-members (2015; 36). These 180 member responses represent approximately 5.29% of our total membership base of 3,400 members.
Members mostly live in the outer suburbs of Melbourne; 36.67%.Over a quarter of our members live in regional Victoria; 28.89%.30.56% live in the Melbourne CBD.Only 3.33% of our member base is interstate.
A quarter of our members are 56-65 years old (25.58%), then in descending order then 36-45 (23.26%), 46-55 (18.02%), 26-35 (15.12%), 65 or older (13.96%), 18-25 (1.16%). 2.91% preferred not to say.
Our members identified as 80% female and 18.79% male.
The majority of our members are emerging writers (52.25%) or early career writers (33.15%). About 12.92% are established writers, who have at least one full-length work published or performed.
What members earn
The total number of responses indicates members make income across multiple streams, writing, other arts activities and non-arts activities.
The average percentages in each were;
- Writing 15.4%.
- Other arts activities 9.31%.
- Non-arts activities 66.55%.
What members value
Overall members who responded rate their experience with Writers Victoria as above average (45.93%) or high (32.59%).
Information is the most important service provided by Writers Victoria, followed by discounts to WV courses and events, and The Victorian Writer magazine.
Members also valued public events (like ‘The Salon’) and discounts on participating retail outlets, festivals, etc.
What members want
Members considered topic or content to be very important (96.51%), then presenter or tutor (62.35%) and finally price (57.14%). Of some importance was the venue (46.39%) and distance from home (45.51%).
Members were very interested in weekend afternoon activities (57.05%), followed by weekday evenings (43.51%) and weekday full days (43.14%).
Members were very interested in 1 day courses (58.39%), as well as in social activities like The Salon or program launch (56.67%) and evening 1-3 hour events (33.11%).
Areas that members would like to learn more about included;
- Publishing/getting published
- Short stories
- Making a living from writing
- Literary fiction
