Our Prize Winners for April 2018


Welcome to our monthly brag about our Writers Victoria community members who have won awards, been shortlisted or longlisted for writing prizes or received industry recognition.

Collective celebrations

 

The winners of the 2017 Aurealis Awards for the best Australian science-fiction, fantasy and horror writing published in 2017 have been announced.

Best science-fiction novel:

  • Jane Rawson for 'From the Wreck'

Best horror novel:

  • Lois Murphy, member, for 'Soon'

 

The shortlist for the 2018 Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs) have been announced.

Literary fiction book of the year:

  • Sofie Laguna, tutor, ‘The Choke’
  • Mark Brandi, member, for ‘Wimmera’

Book of the year for older children (ages 13+):

  • Danielle Binks, tutor, ‘Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology’

Book of the year for younger children (ages 7-13):

  • Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton for ‘The 91-Storey Treehouse’

The Matt Richell Award for new writer of the year:

  • Mark Brandi, member, for ‘Wimmera’

 

The longlists for the 2018 Kibble and Dobbie Literary Awards have been announced.

The longlisted titles for the Nita B Kibble Literary Award for an established author are:

  • Maxine Beneba Clarke, tutor, for ‘The Hate Race’
  • Sofie Laguna, tutor, for ‘The Choke’

The longlisted titles for the Dobbie Literary Award for a first-time published author are:

  • Melanie Cheng, member, for ‘Australia Day’
  • Jennifer Down, tutor, for ‘One Magic Hour’
  • Micheline Lee, tutor and member, for ‘The Healing Party’

 

The shortlist for the 2018 Australian Literature Society (ALS) Gold Medal has been announced. Among the longlisted titles are:

  • 'The Choke' Sofie Laguna, tutor

 

The winners of the 2018 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards have been announced. Among the winning titles are:

Christina Stead Prize for Fiction:

  • Bram Presser, member, for ‘The Book of Dirt’

Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry:

  • Bella Li, tutor, for ‘Argosy’

UTS Glenda Adams Award for New Writing:

  • Bram Presser, member, for ‘The Book of Dirt’

People’s Choice Award:

  • Bram Presser, member, for ‘The Book of Dirt’

 

The shortlists for the 2018 Norma K Hemming Award have been announced. Among the books shortlisted for the long work category are:

  • Krissy Kneen, tutor, for ‘An Uncertain Grace’

 

Individual celebrations

'The House by The River' by Catherine Watkins, member, was long-listed for the UK Fish Publishing Short Memoir Prize from 780 entries.

Member Jo Burnell was a semi-finalist in the Kore Press Memoir Prize. Jo's memoir was one of 19 selected from the 425 submissions. As a semi-finlaist her memoir was read by the judge Cheryl Strayed.
