Vampire as Text

In this workshop, you will look at vampire fiction to focus on the trope of the “reveal”: the moment in which the text lets us know that a character is a vampire.

We will look at film adaptations of vampire text to identify, interpret and complicate the structure of these reveals as well as observe their narration. You will consider the characterisation of these vampires through a range of perspectives and trace their physical and psychological evolution in dialogue with a range of theories, moving from Dracula to Interview with the Vampire to Twilight and beyond. Participants are encouraged to bring and present a 200-word sample of their own writing that showcases a moment of vampiric “reveal” for discussion.
