Eroticism and Provocation in Poetry

Date:

Summary:

This is a course for the terrified. If you’ve ever been afraid that your sexuality is either (or simultaneously) too loud or too minimal, too chocolate or too vanilla, too extreme or not extreme enough in an age of simultaneous excess and austerity, this course is for you. If you’ve ever wondered how to write the skid marks of longing, loss, shame, surrender and other Scorpio states of feeling, out of your heart and into poetry, this course is for you. If you’ve tried and failed to find works of art and literature – popular or high-brow – that resonated with what you seek the most in your erotic experiences, this course is for you.

Details

Please note: this course is reserved for women and gender- and sex-non-conforming writers.

Eroticism and Provocation in Poetry invites people of all backgrounds and writing experience to sit together, read together, look inward, and write about erotic love in ways that empower the self, the partner, and the reader. This is a don’t-yuck-someone’s-yums kink-positive safe space that recognises that racism, queerphobia, transphobia, ableism, and body snark are never sexy, and therefore never tolerated.

By the end of this course, I hope that we can all:

  • Practice talking about sex and sexual desire using words and/or images depicting sensations

  • Recognise that so much of sex happens in the mind – and put words to our fantasies, and to the fantasies behind the fantasies

  • Recognise that sex never happens in a vacuum – and that age, gender, sexuality, religion, class, and ability carry meanings that can sometimes take the form of unhealthy baggage when not processed properly

  • Recognise that consent, safer sex, and mutual enduring respect for the other, make sex – and erotic literature – sexier

  • Rewrite toxic narratives that have led us to embrace unhealthy forms of sexuality that have harmed us and our lovers

  • Explore our personal stories as the basis for writing new, original erotic work that helps us and our readers unlearn ideas that have not served our private sex lives or our collective humanity. When we win in our inner lives, we’re giving others like us permission to win.

About Angelita Biscotti

Angelita Biscotti has written or created art about queer love and romance, polyamory, beauty standards, and mental health from an intersectional standpoint, celebrating wisdom from the margins that should perhaps set the standards for the new universal.
