ONLINE WORKSHOP: The Nuts and Bolts of Writing: Grammar, Syntax, Punctuation, and Construction

Date:

With:

Abigail Nathan

Rating:

ALL

Summary:

A lot of writing “rules” seem so restrictive that by the time you have applied them all, your story feels flat. Guidelines such as “write what you know” or “show don’t tell” can sound meaningless when you try to apply them to your own work. This course demystifies some of the common writing jargon and provides tips and tricks to help you edit your own manuscript and bring your story to life.

Details

This session will take place online, via Writers Victoria’s online platform.

You will learn how to:

  • Trust your reader and avoid unnecessary details and overwriting.

  • Identify and eliminate filter words and repetition.

  • Recognise show don’t tell (and when it’s OK to tell).

  • Avoid misplaced modifiers and dangling participles.

  • Find and assess adjectives and adverbs (they’re not all bad).
