Learn from two experienced publishers on how to think as a publisher thinks, explore the commissioning and acquisitions process, and find out how you can pitch your brilliant idea to its best advantage.

You will learn

  • how to write a non-fiction book proposal that gets publishers’ attention
  • the do's and don'ts of approaching publishers and agents
  • how to present yourself as an author
  • how to work out the best non-fiction form for your work, and whether your idea is appropriate for a book-length project
  • the difference between a pitch and a synopsis, including how to pitch before you've completed the manuscript

About Meelee Soorkia

Meelee Soorkia has been working as a writer and editor for more than a decade. Most recently she was Senior Development Editor at Hardie Grant Books, where she specialised in narrative non-fiction and memoir. She has worked on several bestselling and award-winning titles, including ‘The Undesirables’ by Mark Isaacs, ‘The Long Goodbye’ by PJ Parker and ‘Good Muslim Boy’ by Osamah Sami.

About Fran Berry

Fran Berry is a publisher with over twenty years experience in the publishing industry. Fran’s publishing career has spanned roles in marketing, publicity, rights management, imported book buying and commissioning. Most recently, Fran was Publishing Director at Hardie Grant Publishing, a company she helped establish. Fran has commissioned and acquired numerous authors and books including several award winning and bestselling titles. Authors include Denise Scott, Shaun Micallef, Phil Jarratt, James Halliday, Steve Kilbey, Osamah Sami, PJ Parker and Mark Isaacs. Fran is currently working as a literary scout and consultant for both publishers and filmmakers.
