Summary:

The art of self-editing and finding the right beta readers can be a minefield. How do you polish your manuscript to a level that entices beta readers to surrender their free time? Go through the intricacies of structural and line editing, and learn how to give feedback to other writers and how training beta readers to provide quality feedback can benefit you.

Participants should submit a seven-page writing sample of one complete scene (double spaced) to be beta read during the session. 

This course is split into two sections.

In part one we’ll develop your self-editing skills where you’ll learn:

  • the five step checklist of a good self-edit
  • how to map and fix structural problems in your work.
  • how to simplify your sentences so you’re saying exactly what you mean
  • how to build your primary and secondary character’s emotional arcs and motivations for better characterisation
  • how to build consistent theme, tone and pace throughout your novel.

In part two we will cover:

  • what you should look for in a beta reader
  • how to train your beta reader to give constructive feedback
  • how to react and work through critiques of your work
  • a group beta reading and feedback session on your seven pages.
