It is often assumed that poetry sits apart from non-poetic types of writing such as works of popular fiction. But what if this isn’t is the case? In this workshop, we will read, discuss and write new poems inspired by your love of genres of fiction (and cinema) such as dystopia, crime, gothic, horror, the historical and the autobiographical.

You will learn:

  • To develop an understanding of poetry as a literary form deeply connected to other forms

  • To write poems inspired by your own favourite popular literary genres

  • To see the poetic possibilities of popular literary genres

  • To write poems that relate to the reading experiences of the fans of popular literary genres

  • To prepare poems for publication and submit them to journals

  • Writing equipment

  • A copy of one of their favourite works of genre fiction

 

About Ali Alizadeh

Ali Alizadeh’s books of poetry include Towards the End (Giramondo, 2020) and Ashes in the Air (UQP, 2011). He is also the author of a work of historical fiction, The Last Days of Jeanne d’Arc (Giramondo, 2017) and a work of political satire, Transactions (UQP, 2013). He is a Senior Lecturer in Literary Studies and Creative Writing at Monash University. He is currently writing Horror fiction.
