Gippsland Write-Ability Workshop: Creative Non-Fiction

Summary:

In this online two-hour creative nonfiction workshop, participants will explore two distinct life-writing subgenres: memoir and the personal essay. Participants will learn to identify strategies commonly used in these genres, using examples provided in-class. Participants will also begin developing a new work of creative writing of their own, based on prompts given during the session.  The workshop will be broken into three lessons across the two-hour session, with short breaks between, and a final session for sharing and questions. All materials will be provided.

This event has been organised by the Inner Gippsland Write-ability group, and is made possible by Writers Victoria and the Grace Marion Wilson Trust. It is available free to people in Gippsland with a disability. All resources will be provided in Microsoft Word format for enlargement and accessibility by screen-readers, and the event will be Auslan interpreted.

Learning Outcomes:

In this course, students will: 

  • Begin a piece of short nonfiction prose which could later be developed into a longer work;

  • Explore options for telling personal stories: what is memoir, what is an essay;

  • Identify and build on recurring themes in their own writing; and

  • Discuss and analyse exemplars of memoir and personal essay, and how to use them as inspiration for their writing.
     

About Ellena Savage

Ellena Savage is the author of the essay collection Blueberries (Text Australia and Scribe UK, 2020), the chapbook Yellow City (The Atlas Review, 2019) and numerous essays, stories, and poems published in literary journals internationally. Ellena is the recipient of several grants and fellowships, including most recently the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship 2019–2021. She has a PhD in Creative Writing and is a former editor of The Lifted Brow.
