Chaired by Writers Victoria Director, Dr Angela Savage, the panel will comprise writers who've tackled PhD's at various universities, by distance and in-person, with children and without. Come along and find out all you ever wanted to know about creativity in the world of academia.

With Robert Gott, Leigh Redhead, Laura Jean McKay, Rosemary Chang and Rose Michael

About the panel:

Dr Angela Savage holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Monash University. She is a Melbourne writer who has lived and travelled extensively in Asia. Her first novel, ‘Behind the Night Bazaar’, won the 2004 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an unpublished manuscript. All three of her Jayne Keeney PI novels have been shortlisted for Ned Kelly Awards, with ‘The Dying Beach’ also shortlisted for the 2014 Davitt Award. Angela won the 2011 Scarlett Stiletto Award for short crime fiction.

Robert Gott is the author of more than 90 works of fiction and non-fiction, for children and adult readers. He has written several crime novels, two of which, including ‘The Holiday Murders’, have been shortlisted for the Ned Kelly Award for Best Crime Fiction. He is also the creator of the long-running cartoon in ‘The Age’ newspaper, ‘The Adventures of Naked Man’, which he draws the old-fashioned way: with a nib pen dipped in ink.

Leigh Redhead is an Australian mystery writer. She is best known as the creator of the character Simone Kirsch, private investigator. Leigh holds a MPhil in Creative Writing from the University of Queensland.

Laura Jean McKay is the author of ‘Holiday in Cambodia’ (Black Inc. 2013), a story collection that was shortlisted for three national book awards in Australia. Her work has appeared in ‘The Best Australian Stories’, ‘Award Winning Australian Writing’ and ‘The North American Review’. Laura is also the winner of the Alan Marshall short story award, an Asialink and Martin Bequest Scholarship recipient and has recently completed a PhD at the University of Melbourne.

Rosemary Chang is an academic developer, writer and researcher. In her role at RMIT University, she partners with university staff on Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoTL) initiatives. Her PhD research explores writers’ experiences of strong emotions in connection to writing through the lens of mindfulness.

Rose Michael lectures in writing and publishing at RMIT. Her first novel, ‘The Asking Game’, was a Vogel runner-up and received an Aurealis honourable mention. In 2007 Rose co-founded Arcade Publications to publish unconventional (in form and format) histories. She established the Postgraduate Publishing and Communications internships program at the University of Melbourne, has been a commissioning editor at Hardie Grant and editor of the ‘Weekly Book Newsletter’. Her journalism and short stories have been frequently published, the latter often awarded.
