Winter School: Writing the Self in Creative Non-Fiction
Date:
With:
Lee Kofman
Rating:
EMERGING
Summary:
In creative nonfiction authors always have some presence.Details
They can be central or secondary characters, in some instances there is no explicit ‘I’, but the authorial presence is felt through the voice and peculiar interpretation of events. We’ll look at how to incorporate our own stories within the wider issues we explore, how to use the self when we engage with the stories and perspectives of others, and how to render ourselves into compelling characters.
You will learn
- to understand the concept of authorial presence through narration and persona
- how to render yourself into a compelling character
- how to write yourself as the narrator of other people’s stories
- how to write yourself as a researcher grappling with the issues central to your story
- to critically reflect on when to use your ‘I’ directly and when to remain the non-intrusive narrator.
