Find out how you can turn your love of reading into a reviewing career. This seminar is the essential toolkit for emerging reviewers, covering tone, content, angles, editing, pitching and ethical issues.

Thuy On, The Big Issue books editor and a freelance critic for The Age, The Australian, Books + Publishing and others, has more than twenty years’ experience in writing book reviews (and yes, she has a well-stocked library!)

You will learn

  • some of the challenges facing contemporary book critics
  • about book reviewing as a craft/art form
  • to navigate the ethical issues of critical practice
  • responsibilities of a critic
  • possible outlets to publish book criticism.

About Thuy On

Thuy On is the books editor of The Big Issue. She is also a freelance critic, (arts) writer and editorial Jill-of-all-trades. She has written for a number of publications including The Australian, The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Australian Book Review, Books + Publishing, Overland, Westerly, Meanjin and Australian Short Stories. Thuy mostly concentrates on book criticism and journalism but she has also reviewed theatre, film and comedy.
