Featuring Lei Tao (Xi'an), Xu Xi (New York and Hong Kong), Yan Tong (Shaanxi), Alice Pung, Ouyang Yu, Belinda Jiang and Wang Ruobing.

Bloggers in residence Allison Chan and Xia Cui will document the festival through a series of articles and live-tweets, thanks to our partnership with Peril magazine.

Full program

• 9.00 am - Registrations and morning tea
• 10.00 am - Welcome and official opening
• 10.30 am - Lei Tao keynote (in Chinese with English translation)
• 11.00 am - Tao Lei and Yan Tong in conversation with May Hu, followed by audience Q&A
• 12.00 pm - Xu Xi keynote (in English with Chinese translation), followed by audience Q&A
• 12.50 pm - Lunch will be provided
• 1.30 pm - Welcome back
• 1.45 pm - Belinda Jiang and Wang Ruobing in conversation with Luna Madden (in Chinese with English translation), followed by audience Q&A
• 2.30 pm - Alice Pung and Ouyang Yu in conversation with William Zhang (in English with Chinese translation), followed by audience Q&A
• 3.30 pm - Thank you and close

The lead-up to the festival will also provide professional development for writers and translators through two events with the Marco Polo Project, an introduction to Reading and Writing Across Languages and an All-You-Can Translate workshop on Saturday 27^th August 2016.

About Lei Tao

Lei Tao's publications date back to 1977. A member of the Chinese Writers Association National Committee, his representative works include 'Close to the Alps', 'Walking to the Kingdom', and 'Actresses who came out from Xi’an Film Factory'. Lei was awarded Russia’s '60 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945' Jubilee Medal and the Chekhov Literature Award in 2010.

About Xu Xi

Xu Xi is the author of nine books of fiction and essays, and editor or co-editor of three anthologies of Hong Kong writing in English. Her novel 'Habit of a Foreign Sky' was shortlisted for the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize. Xu has taught creative writing and lectured on global culture at universities in Asia, the US and Europe. She lives between New York and Hong Kong.

About Yan Tong

Yan Tong is a Shaanxi-based Chinese writer and journalist. He is a member of the Shaanxi Writers Association and major journalism committees. His books include ‘Close to the Famous’, ‘Spring Sun’ and ‘Footprints in the Snow’.

About Alice Pung

Alice Pung is an award-winning Melbourne author whose books include ‘Unpolished Gem’, ‘Her Father’s Daughter’ and ‘Laurinda’.

About Ouyang Yu

Ouyang Yu has to date published 80 books of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, literary criticism and literary translation in the English and Chinese languages since he first came to Australia in 1991. And he has won a number of awards for his fiction and literary translation, such as the Festival Award for Innovation in Writing at the Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts for his first novel, The Eastern Slope Chronicle, in 2004, and the NSW Premier’s Award for his 3^rd novel, The English Class, in 2011.

About Belinda Jiang

Belinda Jiang is a novelist and scriptwriter focusing on writing about cross culture marriage and the profound aspiration of new migrants. She started publishing work since 1992 and is recipient of some national competition prizes and awards in China. She is a member of the World Chinese Writers Association.  Honorary president of the Chinese Poets & Authors Society of Victoria. Author of a novel titled <Blossom in Australia>, which was published in 2013 and has been recognised as one of the best sellers in China in 3 top Chinese websites. She migrated to Australia in 2008.

About Wang Ruobing

Wang Ruobing is a Chinese writer, journalist and a member of the Aust-China Writers Association. She writes for different magazines and newspapers. She wrote a large number of articles for vulnerable groups on social response issues, receiving great praise from readers. She has published novels ‘The Flea Woman’, ‘Love Season’ and collections of essays ‘Our Family`s Women’, ‘Innocent Talking’ and ‘The Opposite Boy’. She now lives in Melbourne.
