Date:

With:

Mark Smith

Rating:

ALL

Summary:

The course will engage participants with the practice and craft of the short story. We will discuss what it is that constitutes the short form with particular reference to published stories by Tony Birch, Cate Kennedy and E Annie Proulx. Writing exercises will focus on establishing setting, character and plot - and the importance of your first paragraphs. We will also work with ‘sketching’ and consider how the ‘germ’ of a story can lead to the production of a completed draft. Towards the end of the day we will have time for questions and troubleshooting of short story roadblocks. The program will be suited to writing students at all levels from ‘beginners’ to published writers.
