Whether you’re an emerging writer or deep into your craft, this five-month course aims to meet each story on its own terms while exploring non-traditional narratives and sharpening your narrative intuition as both writer and editor. We discuss drawing upon personal experience while being ravenous in research. Participants are welcome to table work at any stage of development—early drafts still finding their shape, or late-edit stories in need of forensic attention.

Stories of up to 1500 words due Wednesdays 20 February, 20 March, 17 April, 22 May, 19 June

You will learn:

  • Honing authorial voice, while letting characters speak for themselves.
  • Marathon vs sprint vs steeplechase: finding the right narrative mode for each story.
  • Write to know: the integrality of research when writing beyond your comfort zone. (Don’t let your postcode limit your subject matter.)
  • The sense of an ending: knowing when to walk away, knowing when to run.
  • Where to read and be read. Become a familiar of literary publications in Australia and abroad.
