Publishing a memoir can be an ethical – not to mention legal – minefield. How do you balance the need for privacy for real-life characters while retaining the integrity and truthfulness in your work?

Writing memoir almost always involves writing about other people (whether it is friends, lovers or family) – how do you manage these relationships? This course will also explore some more formal publishing issues such as libel and defamation, as well as discussing contracts and how to best review them.

You will learn

  • the art of conflation
  • techniques for concealing real-life identities
  • about ethics in writing
  • to gain confidence in telling your own story
  • how to think about authenticity
