FICTION & NONFICTION
Submissions now open. Closing date for both is midnight on Sunday 15 November 2020.
Island welcomes submissions from Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific and Australians living abroad.
You do not need to be an Island subscriber to submit. However, we believe that writers ought to be readers of the literary magazines in which their work is published, so for this reason each contributor’s total payment package will include a subscription for 4 issues. (If you are already a subscriber, your existing subscription will be extended by 4 issues or you can gift the subscription.). For a small not-for-profit literary magazine, this is a necessary step in a long-term strategy to build circulation. This, in turn, will allow us to increase the amount we can afford to pay our writers. For background information on our contributor fee policy, see here.
Contributor fees are usually between 10 and 20 cents per word for fiction and nonfiction, and $125 per poem, less the cost of a 4-issue subscription (as explained above). Due to a grant from the Cultural Fund of the Copyright Agency, fiction and nonfiction will be paid at 20 cents per word in 2021. We continually strive to increase author payment rates through fundraising and grants.
