Summary:

Can’t draw, but have a great idea for a children’s book or graphic novel? Or simply craving a more collaborative practice? Perhaps you’re not sure where to look for an illustrator, or maybe there’s somebody you’re already working with, but you just can’t figure out the process. In this session, find answers to all your questions about working with an illustrator as a writer.

About the Panelists:

Emma Do is a Vietnamese-Australian writer based in Naarm (Melbourne). She is the author of Working From Home, an illustrated chapbook detailing the stories of Vietnamese outworkers in Australia, and their contributions to the local fashion industry. Emma is currently the editor of frankie magazine. 

Matt Chun is an artist and writer based on Yuin land. He is co-creator and co-editor of The Sunday Paper. He also works as one half of the collaborative project UnMonumental, alongside contemporary artist James Tylor. Matt has created work for National Museum Australia, State Library Victoria, Art Monthly Australasia, Overland Literary Journal, Meanjin Quarterly, Runway Journal and 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. His most recent picture book collaboration is Day Break, alongside Darumbal and South Sea Islander journalist Amy McQuire.

Sandhya Parappukkaran writes stories inspired by her migrant experience, including food and glimpses of nature from her South-Indian heritage. Sandhya resides in Brisbane with her husband, three children and a backyard brimming with mango trees, curry leaves and green chillies. Sandhya’s picture books, The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name, a 2022 CBCA shortlisted book, and Amma’s Sari, are both illustrated by Michelle Pereira and published by Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing (Imprint: Bright Light).
