Writing Across Languages

Nadia Niaz

This workshop will present a mix of theory and guided practical experiments to demystify concepts like code-switching, code-mixing, multilingualism and translation in writing. We will look at the aesthetic, cultural, and political values that inform our choices as writers and think about how our positionality interacts with our writing practice. This workshop is for a broad audience – you do not have to be multilingual to attend. In fact, monolingual writers may find it surprisingly useful!

This seminar will take place online. Detailed instructions for participation will be provided.

You Will Learn:

  • What multilingual writing is, who does/can do it, who it’s for, and why it’s useful
  • The aesthetics and politics of translation and non-translation
  • How similar multilingual and monolingual writing can be
  • How to experiment both within and between languages and registers
  • How to see your creative choices from the point of view of language use
  • To develop a sense of fun and exploration through linguistic play
