Summary:
In this course, we’ll learn to express the truth of feelings without taming them, shedding light on the emotional interiors and truths of both fictional and nonfictional characters. Across three workshops, we’ll explore the use of place to reveal characters’ psychological landscapes, practice describing emotions that can’t be clearly labelled, develop strategies to represent ‘dark’ emotions without losing our readers and work with revision techniques to refine our understanding of our characters’ feelings.

- How to use place to express characters’ immediate emotional states
- Strategies to conceptualise emotionally complex characters, fictional or real
- To identify and describe emotions we have no names for
- How to get to know your characters in depth via redrafting
- How to revise your characters’ responses to what is happening in the story
About the Tutor:
Lee Kofman is the author of six books, including Imperfect (2019, Affirm Press), which was shortlisted for Nib Literary Award 2019, and The Dangerous Bride (2014, MUP); editor of Split (Ventura, 2019), which was longlisted for ABIA Awards 2020, and co-editor of Rebellious Daughters (Ventura, 2016). Her short works have been widely published and her blog was a finalist for Best Australian Blogs 2014. Her most recent book is The Writer Laid Bare (Ventura, 2022).
