In this hands-on workshop we’ll be delving into the nitty gritty of how to incorporate grief and loss into YA fiction. We’ll be covering different theories and frameworks for considering grief and loss, looking at strong examples of grief in YA fiction and covering strategies for avoiding clichés and getting your projects moving. You will be given time to work on your projects and receive feedback on the day.

  • Practical exercises and approaches for exploring grief in your YA
  • How to avoid clichés in portrayals of grief
  • Strategies for keeping grief true to your characters and your story
  • How to engage with examples of YA fiction as a writer rather than a reader

About the Tutor:

Eliza Henry-Jones is an author, PhD candidate and sessional academic in creative writing. She is the author of two novels and two novels for young adults, which have been listed for a number of awards and her fifth novel Salt and Skin will be published in August. She has qualifications in psychology as well as grief, loss and trauma counselling. She lives on a little flower farm on Wurundjeri land.
