Summary:
Controversies regarding truth in memoir are as old as the genre itself. It is no surprise then that memory and the challenges it presents—formal, ethical, and strategic—make for rich literature. This workshop will consider various literary models and approaches to writing unremembered memory, contested memory, and collective, historical memory. Though we will be studying nonfiction prose in this workshop, fiction, poetry and cross-genre students are welcome to attend.Details
This workshop will take place online. Detailed instructions for participation will be provided.
You Will Learn:
- To identify gaps in your writing where memory fails you as a research technique;
- A range of research methods to help fill those memory gaps;
- How to use literary ‘models’ to guide your own writing;
- To deeply consider the ethical implications that arise in the face of contested memory; and
- A range of innovative and rigorous approaches to writing uncertain memories.
