Ballarat Writers Inc produces numerous writing-related events every year, including literary trivia nights, Ballarat Writers' Showcase, masterclasses and workshops about every stage of writing, poetry mentoring (the Pure Poetry project), and more. The Ballarat Writers Festival in September focuses on childrens' and young adult writing. Ballarat Writers Inc also offers a competition every year with a first prize of $1,000, alternating between the Southern Cross Literary Competition (short story), and the Martha Richardson Memorial Poetry Prize.
