Over the year guest authors will impart their expertise and share analysis of the writing craft in an intimate, relaxed and interactive environment. Each month will alternate between fiction and non-fiction writing areas and topics will address the step-by-step processes and essential make-up of successful writing. Special guests include Steven Amsterdam, Steven Carroll, Arnold Zable and more. This month features David Astle who will tackle the topic of Non Fiction Stories.

Where Fact and Fiction Meet

A session to bring the skills of a novelist or short-story writer into the realm of reportage and profiling. You’ll see how closely the best examples of both disciplines overlap. Both demand good pacing, vivid detail, a sense of place, intimate knowledge of the subject plus a spate of other pervasive elements. Two lively hours, regardless of your side of the divide.

David Astle is the dictionary bloke on SBS’s Letters and Numbers, as well as the DA of the crossword page. He’s also a journalist, columnist, reviewer, author and award-writing tutor. He’s written two novels, including The Book of Miles, and three non-fiction titles, including Puzzled (a manual-cum-memoir for word nuts) and Offbeat (a trivia/travel guide to Australia).
