Writers with disability in Castlemaine

A portrait of Arnold Zable

Writers with disability in the Castlemaine region are welcome to join a free workshop with acclaimed writer and activist Arnold Zable later this month, as part of our Writeability Goes Regional program.

In Get Writing, Arnold will help participants decide how to write their story and answer basic questions about writing, techniques and how to get going.

The workshop will take place from 1-4pm on Monday 14 March at the Senior Citizen’s Centre in Castlemaine.

Writeability Goes Regional is also proud to support the launch of Michael Uniacke’s memoirs ‘Deafness Down’ and ‘Deafness Gain’ as part of Arts Open and the Castlemaine Fringe Festival.

Michael writes mainly on themes around deafness, hearing impairment and disability. He wrote and presented comedy material on disability for the television series ‘No Limits’ on Channel 31 and has worked in journalism, as a freelance contributor, editor and subeditor, for magazines and newspapers. His writing interests include deaf history in Europe and Australia.

Launched by Arnold Zable, ‘Deafness Down’ tells of growing up in a family in which four out of five children were born deaf to hearing parents. ‘Deafness Gain’ tells how the author came to terms with being deaf, discovering that deafness means more than merely a loss of hearing.

The launch will take place from 5.15-6.15pm on Monday 14 March at the Phee Broadway Theatre in Castlemaine.

Presented in collaboration with Writeability, Arts Open and the Castlemaine Fringe Festival.
