Volunteering with Writers Victoria

The first time I donned my ‘Volunteer’ badge for a Writers Victoria workshop, I was so excited that I posted a photo on my social media. The people I met at Sally Rippin’s Writing for Children course that day, almost a year ago, have become not only my writing group, but also good friends and a fabulous support network for my writing journey. The lesson: You never know where volunteering for Writers Victoria will lead you.

Aside from sleeping soundly knowing they are helping Writers Victoria thrive and grow, volunteers have the opportunity to gain work experience, network, meet interesting people, make valuable contacts and share their expertise. They can also attend workshops, courses, events and seminars for free, which is a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of Australia’s best writers and teachers.

Writers Victoria is a not-for-profit organisation, and it relies on a stellar team of volunteers to support writers all over Victoria (and beyond).

Wondering whether you have what it takes? The duties of WV volunteers are many and varied. They assist with workshops, seminars and other Writers Victoria events, often after office hours or on weekends, with tasks such as:

  • Setting up workshop spaces
  • Meeting and greeting speakers and guests
  • Operating a “roving mike”
  • Distributing and/or collecting evaluation forms
  • Talking about Writers Victoria at info stands and events
  • Assisting with mail-outs
  • Filing, cataloguing and data entry.

Volunteering is a great way to connect with other writers and give back to your writing community.

How to apply

Writers Victoria is currently accepting applications to fill a number of positions on its volunteer list, and will be conducting interviews in late June. If you’d like to be considered for a role, email an expression of interest to info@writersvictoria.org.au before 10am on Monday 25 June. Please put ‘VOLUNTEER’ in the subject line and tell us a little about yourself and your availability, which must include either evenings or weekends.

Comments

Hey there,

My name is Amy, and I would love to express my interest in volunteering if I may be of support.

I work with Uniting as their Content and Storytelling Lead, and will soon move to Freelancing.

Like many others who’d be volunteering, i am a lover of words, and am a budding creative writer! I also know that many hands make light work with events - so would love to be of support where I can be.

Please let me know if I may be able to offer anything else.

Much warmth
Amy
