In August 2017, with the company of a good friend, Kate spent a weekend walking 39kms along the Bibbulmun Track, in the Darling Range south-east of Perth. Since then, she has been preoccupied with the challenge of representing an experience like this in words. How do we write about something as simple as a walk in the bush in ways which keep it alive, which avoid reducing it to a diary account? The result has become a work of poetry which incorporates an array of ‘moving parts’: official trail notes, photography, maps and map-making, and a range of textual influences from contemporary music (the songs that got stuck in her head!) to philosophical theory. This presentation will present a selection of this poetry, and connect it back to the experience it emerged from.

About Catherine Noske
Catherine Noske is a lecturer in Creative Writing and editor of Westerly Magazine at the University of Western Australia. Her research focuses on contemporary Australian writing of place. Her creative work has been awarded the Elyne Mitchell Prize for Rural Women Writers (2008 and 2009), received a Varuna fellowship in 2014, and was shortlisted for the 2015 Dorothy Hewett Award. She is currently working on a poetry project and a novel.
