How do we bring history to life through fiction? We’ll look at why we choose to set stories in the past and the challenges involved: how and what to research, how to investigate and interpret real people in history, and different approaches to voice and character. We’ll discuss the all-important questions of how to build a world that is based in reality and also imagined, and techniques for presenting the past in a way that appeals to modern readers.

This workshop will be a series of webinars, reading lists, and writing exercises, delivered over six weeks. All webinars will be recorded and participants will have access to the link. If you are not able to make one of the webinars, you will still be able to access the link in your own time.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Expectations of readers and writers of historical fiction
  • Practical approaches to voices and dialogue
  • Research tips, sources and tools
  • How to integrate research and imagination
  • Writing about real people from the past
