The much-maligned Australian suburbs contain intriguing features that can be the starting points for stories. Hone your eyes to old signage, details of architecture, edgelands, landscapes of loss, and the poetry of the everyday.

Inspired by the Situationists and the idea of psychogeography, we will investigate how ordinary places are rich source material. Whether you write fiction, non-fiction, poetry or memoir, insights from this workshop will stimulate ideas. Includes a workshop, writing time and a walk. Presented in partnership with the City of Stonnington Library and Information Service.

You will learn

  • How to find inspiration for your work in local suburban environments
  • how to fill your writing with carefully-observed, unique details
  • how to bring suburban scenes and settings to life in your novel, memoir, essay or poem
  • how to uncover stories behind suburban locations
  • how to give your writing a strong sense of place.
