Cate Kennedy will illustrate how to make your story feel energized, vivid and engaging using some key concepts of structure, characterization and imagery.

In this workshop Cate will show participants how to practice striking the perfect balance between action, dialogue, narrative ‘beats’ and description and encourage participants to revise and shape their germ of a story idea to bring it to life. This tour is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria and presented in association with Mildura Writers Festival.

You will learn

  • How to think about structure in terms of ‘scenes’

  • how to write effective dialogue

  • how to think about ‘plot’ as a vehicle for characterisation

  • how to identify ‘flat spots’ and your own default habits

  • where to open and close a good story, and why
