You want to write a children’s book and already have an idea for a story. But is it best suited to 3-5-year-old picture book readers, 5-8-year-old chapter book readers or 8-12-year-old middle grade readers? The age of your intended reader can determine vocabulary level, sentence length, structural complexity and character. Overall word count of your text helps to define your readership, but complexity of theme counts too. Having a clear vision of the audience for your children’s book is also crucial for pitching to publishers.

The panel will discuss:

  • Why the printing process for picture books determines the page length of the book.
  • What the typical word count bands are for different age groups.
  • How vocabulary level and length of a sentence corresponds to the age of younger readers.
  • Reading upwards, in relation to the age of a book’s protagonist.
  • The importance of writing (and rewriting) for reading aloud.
